There was cause for celebration as the winners of the inaugural
Guardian Sustainable Business Awards were feted for their contributions in a host of areas ranging from communications to supply chain management.
The awards ceremony at the Guardian's headquarters included the presentation of the
Corporate Sustainability Innovator of the Year award to Mike Barry, who is head of sustainable business at M&S. Nearly 2,000 people took part in the public vote for the award, with other nominees, from Nike, Unilever and B&Q all lauded for their outstanding contributions.
Winners of the 10 other categories ranged from global corporations, such as Levi Strauss & Co and Sony to the very small, with Chest of Drawers winning the Supply Chain award.
Others who scooped awards included household names such as Tesco, Sainsburys and Cafedirect.
The purpose of the awards is to highlight leadership in the field of sustainable business and to share these stories in the hope that others will take up the mantle.
Guardian Sustainable Business is delighted to launch the
Best Practice Exchange, which summarises the achievements of all those our judges felt demonstrate innovation, with more detail on the winners and those who were short-listed.
Collaboration is increasingly being seen to be key to business success in this field so it is hoped that other organisations can get inspiration and practical knowledge from reading these case studies.
Guardian Sustainable Business created the awards with the belief that there is a small but growing number of far-sighted companies that have recognised the importance of integrating sustainability into the core of their operations to ensure their future success, the quality of the entries show that this is indeed the case.
Caroline Holtum, content editor of Guardian Sustainable Business (GSB), said: "GSB is only seven months old but it is already valued and seen as a key resource by professionals who are committed to embedding sustainability into their organisations.
"We are delighted by the number and quality of the entries and pleased that the awards have already become an important part of the annual sustainability calendar.
"While the awards are an opportunity to celebrate those individuals and companies that are committed to making a positive difference, they are also an excellent way of showcasing best practice that we hope other companies can learn from and follow."
